Fischietti di terracotta: 13th-26th January

With this festival we travel to Puglia, a region in south-eastern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southern portion known as Salento, a peninsula, forms the high heel on the "boot" of Italy. It is bordered by the other Italian regions of Molise to the north, Campania to the west, and Basilicata to the southwest.

In the town of Rutigliano, in the Bari Provence, on the 17th January, during the feast of St. Antonio Abate, (the patron of farmers) each boyfriend gives his beloved a basket of fruit, a symbol of the produce from the land with a whistle, in the shape of a rooster, a symbol of virility.

SANT AMBROGIO 3rd - 16th DECEMBER 2009

MILANO e la cucina dell` ORO
Milan and its Golden Cusine

The festivity of Sant' Ambrogio, patron of the city of Milan, is without a doubt, the more waited for and much loved of the festivals by the Milanese with origins dating back to 1288. Once a year, on the 7th of December, one of the largest festivals Milan celebrates is the St Ambrogio festival. This festival is named after St. Ambrose who was a bishop in the Catholic Church and a local of Milan who lived in the city during the 4th Century.

This festival takes place on the streets in and around the area of the Basilica of Sant' Ambrogio Square. In the centre of Milan with an atmosphere of great fascination and suggestion, between thousands of lights, scents and colours; you play. Open from the morning until late in the evening, the celebrations of this festival are marked primarily by a huge market. With immense crowds pouring into the homonymous piazza and browsing among the innumerable stands of every type: dresses, furniture, ethnic objects, furnishings, crafts, antique books, cakes and sweets, hot mulled wine and handmade clothing. In fact you can find cold cuts, cheese and have the official wine of the day, the vin brulé, with roasted chestnuts, that are what you need to warm you up on a cold day. The festivity starts two days before and finish with the fair on the 7th of December.

This market has a very ancient tradition and a true Milan institution, much loved by the children. Its name comes from the exclamations of joy from the mouths of the children. "Oh Bej! Oh Bej!" which in Milanese dialect means: How pretty! How pretty!

This festival day in Milan is also significant because it usually coincides with the first day of the opera season in Milan.
